Ame’ Marie (Retterer) Alerding

Ame’ Marie (Retterer) Alerding passed away peacefully on January 31, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born the youngest of four girls to Richard E. and Ellen M. Retterer on August 25, 1959.  After attending IPS School #84 her family moved to Bloomington, Indiana where she graduated from Bloomington South High School in 1977.

In 1979 Ame’ began working in the Trust Department at American Fletcher National Bank in Indianapolis where she met her future husband Joe. After spending several years in the banking industry she transitioned to the brokerage business when she joined Shearson Lehman Brothers as an Executive Assistant. Following her time in financial services she began a long career working in a variety of assistant administrative positions at St. Matthew Catholic School, Indianapolis, North Elementary School, Noblesville, IN and for 16 years as the Registrar and Guidance assistant at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis.

Ame’ enjoyed spending time with her family, planning for and enjoying Christmas and Easter, gardening and hanging out on weekends and summers at Lake Santee. She also had a deep affection for horses starting at a young age having had her own horse and an offspring.

Ame’ was drawn to her dedication to schools by her love for children. She was known to many students as their “School Mom”.  She was blessed with four wonderful children of her own and ten loving grandchildren.  She loved each and every one of them unconditionally, and they in turn loved their Mimi.

Ame’ was pre-deceased by her parents and is survived by her husband Joe, children Joe Alerding, Jr. (Caitlin), Tom Alerding (Songwah), Ellen Kennedy (Bill) and Rob Alerding, sisters Pam Waymouth (Bob), Kim Retterer, Julie Retterer and grandchildren Graeme, Owen, Joey and Erin Alerding, Kate, Grace, Luke and Claire Kennedy, Ayden and Ame Jane Alerding.

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 6, 2024 from 4-7pm at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 4100 East 56^th St., Indianapolis with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Matthew on Wednesday, February 7^th at 11:00am. Funeral arrangements provided by Flanner Buchanan Cremation & Burial Services.
