Alvin "Wimp" Spencer

Alvin “Wimp” Spencer passed away peacefully at his home in Indianapolis on Friday, May 30, 2025. Born on September 6, 1931, to the late Morris and Helen Spencer, Alvin’s early years were shaped by love and resilience. Following the passing of both parents and their older sister, Alvin and his older brother, Robert “Bobby” Spencer, were welcomed into the home of Howard “Hop” and Pauline “Polly” Leeka of Modoc, Indiana. Under their nurturing care, Alvin and Bobby were surrounded by warmth, encouragement, and opportunities for a rich education in both academics and music. Alvin graduated from Stoney Creek High School in 1949.

From 1951 to 1955, Alvin proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. After returning home, he attended Ball State Teachers College, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial arts.

Alvin dedicated his life to teaching, beginning in Windfall, Indiana, and later at Union High School in Randolph County. He went on to teach at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the Walker Career Center. Alvin’s teaching career spanned 32 years, culminating in his retirement in 1991. He left an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues throughout Indiana.

In 1956, Alvin married Carolyn June Spencer, and they shared a devoted and loving marriage until her passing in 1997. Together, they raised three sons: Bryan Scott, Bruce (Oranit), and Bradley (Hailie). Alvin and Carolyn loved taking trips out west, especially when they could bring their Jeep for adventurous rides through the mountains and desert trails. Alvin was a cherished grandfather to Stephanie (Paul) Ciabotti, Aaron Spencer, and Carolyn and Cooper Spencer. He found immense joy in his great-grandchildren, Margaret “Maggie” and Aaron Ciabotti. Alvin also loved being an uncle to Bobbie’s daughters: Susie, Beth, Gail, and Linda.

In 2000, Alvin was blessed to find love again when he married Betty Spencer. Together, they enjoyed their retirement years, often traveling to their vacation home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and exploring new places near and far. With their marriage, he warmly welcomed her sons Tony (Debbie) and Scott (Jennifer) Swingley, along with their children and grandchildren, who became treasured additions to the family.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and foster parents, his brother Robert, his wife Carolyn, nieces Gail and Beth, and his grandson Aaron Spencer.

A faithful member of Heather Hills Baptist Church, Alvin served on several committees and mission projects. His passion for life shone through in his hobbies—mechanics, woodworking, boating, family trips, and his love of fishing.

Alvin’s legacy is one of kindness, dedication, and a love for family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Family and friends are invited to gather for the visitation on Wednesday, June 4th from 10:00am-12:00pm at Flanner Buchanan Washington Park East Funeral Home at 10722 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46229. The funeral service will take place after the visitation at 12:00 PM with military honors to follow at Washington Park East Cemetery.
