Alta Smith

Alta Marie Smith, of Zionsville, (formerly of Lebanon and Indianapolis) passed away May 17, 2015. She was born on January 28, 1940 in Lawrence County, Indiana on the farm where she, along with her brothers and sisters, grew up. Her parents were the late Raymond and Laverne (Brown) Mattix. Alta graduated from Mitchell High School (Class of 1958), and then proudly served her country in the United States Army. Alta began her college career at the age of 42, and graduated from Indiana University with a B.A. degree with a double major in Journalism and Political Science. Long before that, her writing ability made Alta a successful secretary and administrative assistant. She also taught at a private school. Alta was a talented photographer, and loved using the camera to capture the beauty of the world. She also liked to garden, and loved all types of flowers. But more than anything she loved to worship JESUS!. Time spent with her children and grandchildren was especially important to Alta. Alta is survived by her children, Barbara Baxter (Brian),Michael Smith and Debbie Smith; grandchildren Joshua Baxter (Anna) and Jessica Willig (Chuck); great-grandchildren, Ben and Elise Baxter, and Ava and Luke Willig; sisters Mary Lou Powell (Mike), Becky Curtis, and Rita Jo Williams (David). She is also survived by her former husband, Irving P. Smith (Lynn). Alta was preceded in death by brothers Robert Mattix and Jim Mattix. Services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Flanner and Buchanan-Zionsville, 105 W. Pine St., Zionsville, IN 46077. Visitation will be held from Noon until the service time. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with military rites. Friends may leave condolences for Alta's family at www.flannerbuchanan.com
