Alice L. Craig

September 17, 1924 — December 18, 2014

ALICE LUCILLE PITTMAN CRAIG 90 years old of Indianapolis, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2014. Alice was born in Indianapolis on September 17, 1924, to Benjamin and Constance Pittman. Alice grew up in Columbus, Indiana, and graduated from Columbus High School. She moved to Indianapolis after graduation and attended Approved University of Beauty Culture. On the weekends, one would find her roller skating at Riverside Roller Rink where she met the love of her life--James Craig. They were married July 21, 1946. Jim and Alice enjoyed 56 years of marriage before Jim's passing on November 26, 2002. Alice was devoted to her family. She and Jim had three children – Connie, Dan, and Richard. Together, they enjoyed many activities such as snow skiing, roller skating, camping, and traveling. Their favorite family trips included a month-long camping trip to Alaska by way of the graveled Alcan Highway and riding burros to the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Alice and Jim were active members of the Wally Byam Caravan Club, an Airstream travel club, traveling to many places within the United States with their friends. They have toured all 50 states plus Canada, Mexico, and various European countries including Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Switzerland, and Austria. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and canning; often with the bounty a short distance from her kitchen door. She made many delicious pies from harvesting her fruit trees (peach, cherry, apple, and pear). She also produced wines, sweet jellies, and pies from the grapes in her vineyard and her blueberry bushes. Her expansive garden included a wide variety of vegetables including corn, radishes, cucumbers, and her favorites – tomatoes and green beans. She also cherished the time she spent cooking for the children in the kitchen of Pike Central Elementary School. She was also an active member within the community. As a member of Traders Point Christian Church, she was a Sunday School teacher. She was a volunteer for the Pike Township Little League and the fire department auxiliary, as well as a volunteer for the Pan Am Games. She was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader and was involved in the Pike Township literacy program which helped children learn to enjoy reading. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Craig, and her brother, Donald Pittman. Alice will be greatly missed by her family, including her sister Juanita Stevens of Nagadoches, Texas, and her children and their spouses – Connie Zering, Daniel Craig (Connie) and Richard Craig (Annie). Other family members include seven grandchildren – Michelle Bright, Melissa Decker, Danea Gorbett, George Harlan, Dustin Craig, Denver Craig, and Bradley Craig – and nine great-grandchildren – David and Emma Bright; Richard and Abby Gorbett; Kaylee, Grant and Aiden Harlan; and Elijah and Lilly Craig.
