Alice Elder

July 30, 1924 — June 11, 2012

Alice Higgs Elder 87, of Indianapolis and formerly of Newman, Illinois was a loving mother, teacher, traveler, painter and crossword enthusiast who died, with family by her side, on Monday, June 11, 2012 at The Hearth at Windermere in Fishers, IN. Her family and friends will always remember her quiet strength, unassuming nature and continual unconditional love for her family and friends. Alice was born on July 30, 1924 in Shelbyville, IN and grew up on a farm in Brookville, IN Alice received a B.A. from Ball State and a M.A. from IU. She taught school several years in Muncie, IN and Champaign, IL. Alice enjoyed travel to Germany, Ireland, Greece and England. She also traveled all over the U.S., many of those trips in the form of camping with children in tow, pitching a tent, cooking on a camp stove and building a fire for marshmallows. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucy and Elmer Higgs; daughter, Ann Cox and second husband, George Elder. She is survived by her brother, Edmund Higgs (Hilda) and sister, Ellen Garrison (Bill); her first husband, Benjamin Cox and children Mark Cox, John Cox, Beth Wellman (Charles) and Jim Cox; grandchildren, Kristin Hanfland, Jim Cox, Beth Engler, Erin Wellman, Tom Wellman and Michael Cox and 4 great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff and friends at The Hearth at Windermere for their wonderful, loving care, kind words and ongoing support. A Celebration of Life will be June 29, 3pm, at Flanner and Buchanan – Broad Ripple, 1305 Broad Ripple Ave. with visitation from 2-3pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. You are invited to go to the Guest Book page to pass along your personal message or tell a story.
