Alfreda (Grady) Winston

Alfreda Grady Winston, was born on October 30, 1936 on a family farm in De Kalb, Mississippi to Hiawatha and Ruth Ella Grady. Alfreda was the eldest of her four siblings; Roosevelt Grady (married to Reaella/passed away) of Chicago, IL, Raymond Grady/passed away (married to Nida) of Phoenix, Arizona, Lou Grady Walker (married to Lawrence) of Aurora, IL and Helen Grady /passed away. The family moved from Mississippi to Chicago in 1947.

Alfreda was a highly intelligent woman, earning a spot in one of the National Societies reserved only for people of a higher intellect. Alfreda attended the University of Illinois-Urbana on a full scholarship and graduated with a Degree in Nursing. After briefly working as a nurse, she decided to change her career. Alfreda then attended The University of Chicago and graduated with a Degree in Social Work. She continued her career as a Social Worker, helping young women and at-risk youth until retirement.

On November 29, 1968, Alfreda was married to David Winston Jr (passed away) originally of Tuscumbia, Alabama. Both Alfreda and David had careers as Social Workers. Alfreda and David would later adopt their daughter, which they named Christianna Ayobami (Boobie) Winston (now Christianna Scott, married to Julian).

Alfreda enjoyed activities such as bowling, fishing, Sudoku puzzles and playing Scrabble with her brother-in- law, Lawrence Walker. Most of all, she loved her grandchildren very deeply.

Alfreda was a long-time member of Keystone Baptist Church located on the West side of Chicago, Illinois. She attended routinely each Sunday until she moved to Portage, Indiana in approximately 2005, to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren.

Alfreda was proceeded in death by her parents; Hiawatha and Ruth Ella Grady, her sister: Helen Grady, her sister-in-law: Realla Grady, her brother: Raymond Grady, her nephew: Patrick Grady, her grandson: Christian L. Mays and her husband: David Winston Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory; her sister and brother in law: Lou Grady Walker & Lawrence Walker, her brother: Roosevelt Grady, her daughter and son in law: Christianna & Julian Scott, her grandchildren: Angel Mays, Cristopher Winston-Miller & Skai Scott as well as a host of cousins, extended family and friends including the nurses that cared for her and became her friends: Rhoda Colon and Jenise Expose.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 11am-12pm EST at Flanner Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46250. A funeral service will begin at 12pm EST and friends and family are welcome to gather following the service until 2pm EST.
