Alfred Renzi

Dr. Alfred A. Renzi, Zionsville, IN passed away October 15, 2013. He was born on July 20, 1925 to the late Genarro and Linda Renzi in Rochester, NY. Dr. Alfred Renzi started his academic journey at the Aquinas Institute in Rochester, NY before attending Fordham University. In 1947 Dr. Renzi graduated from Fordham University and did his graduate studies at Syracuse University where he was awarded his Ph.D. in Zoology and Pharmacology. After receiving his Ph.D., Dr. Renzi went to work for Ciba Pharmaceutical Company in Summit, New Jersey where he served successively as Associate Endocrinologist, Senior Endocrinologist, Associate Director of Physiology, and Head of Endocrine Pharmacology. Between the years of 1955 and 1958 Dr. Renzi also served with the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Pharmacologist in the Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry at the School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. After Dr. Renzi's success at Ciba and in the U.S Air Force he went on to work for the Dow Chemical Company and Merrell Dow between the years of 1967 to 1990 where he served many years as the Associate and Head Director of the Pharmacology Department. While at Dow, Dr. Renzi was renowned for many of his works and publications in Endocrinology and Pharmacology. After retiring from Dow in 1990, Dr. Renzi went on to work for St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis in the research department where he served as an advisory member of the Research Committee and was a member of the Institutional Review Board. In 2005 Dr. Renzi retired from St. Vincent, but continued to be a monumental and influential member of the community. Dr. Renzi gave back to the community through his service as a member of the Lion's Club in Zionsville and also volunteered as a eucharistic minister at St. Vincent Hospital for 28 years. Dr. Renzi was also very active in his faith community. Dr. Renzi was a devout member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church where he was a member of the choir and also assisted in masses as a eucharistic minister. Dr. Renzi was also appointed the honorary title of Fourth Degree Knight for the Knights of Columbus. Dr. Renzi's life was further enriched by his marriage to Martha G. Gilman on Sept. 4, 1954. Dr. and Mrs. Renzi were happily married for 59 years and created a house full of faith, love, and laughter. Dr. Renzi is survived by his wife Martha, his children Linda Schueler, David (Nanette), Richard (Julie), Stephen, and Maura Renzi, along with 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
