Alford Waltz

Alford E. Waltz, age 98, passed away on August 24th, 2026 surrounded by family.

Born on June 2, 1928 to Nathan and Elizabeth Waltz in their Market Street home, he was an Indianapolis resident his whole life. Al was a World War II veteran that served in the Philippines as a radio operator. He had dozens of jobs in his youth, but he made a career as a Test Engineer at the Allison Transmission division of General Motors where he worked for 30 years. He lived at his Speedway home for 69 years.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and hosting family dinners. He was an all-around family man—a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. There was nothing he loved more than shuttling his grandchildren around and attending all of their school and sporting events. He was an ideal playmate, educator, and role model.

He never hesitated to share his wisdom, and reminded us of the importance of honesty and kindness. Whenever distressed, he would remind us, “count your blessings.”

Al had a charm that could brighten anyone’s day and a story for every occasion. We’ll miss his jokes, his stories, and the warmth he brought to every gathering. His love and lessons will stay with us always.

He is survived by his daughters, Sharron Boswell and Ruth Childress; son, David (Mary) Waltz; his brother, Eugene Waltz; four grandchildren, Jeremiah (Michelle) Boswell, Joshua Childress, Jonathan (Yuri) Childress, and Jenna (Aaron) Childress; and three great-grandchildren, Madison and Adalyn Boswell and Jaxson Childress. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley, his parents, and brothers, Russell and Paul.

A celebration of Alford’s life will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at noon with visitation from 11 am at Flanner Buchanan-Floral Park. Friends and family are welcome to share memories and photographs.
