Alexander Mitchell Hedlund

IS1 Alexander Mitchell Hedlund, 28, of Gambrills, Maryland passed away August 11, 2021.  He was born October 22, 1992, in Indianapolis, the son of Thomas Eugene Hedlund and Terri (Strawback) Bogue. 

Alex started his education being home schooled with his siblings before joining the US Coast Guard and continuing his education at Western Governors University.  His US Coast Guard career included work on the cutter Anacapa in Petersburg, Alaska before training as a rescue diver in San Francisco.  His journey then led him to Long Island Sound (New Haven, Connecticuttending navigation aids before his final training and career as an information specialist at both Fort Mead and Coast Guard headquarters. 

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Terri and Rob Bogue; siblings, Claude (Kelly) Hedlund, Lauren Hedlund, Rachel Hedlund, Nicholas (Alyssa) Hedlund, George Hedlund, and Alex Bogue; nephew, Finley Hedlund; and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in passing by his father, Thomas Hedlund; maternal grandparents, Fred Strawback and Carol Warner; and paternal grandparents, Paul and Rose Hedlund.  

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 23, 2021, at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel, 325 East Carmel Drive.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.  All are invited to share in a peace meal with the family at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 10655 Haverstick Rd, Carmel, IN 46033.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Coast Guard Foundation.
