Aletha Hughs

Aletha M. Hughs, 72, of Zionsville died Friday evening, October 5, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after an extended illness. She was born January 4, 1940, in Freeport, Illinois, to Alice Harms and William Bergman. Surviving are her husband of 54 years, James Hughs; daughter, Toni (Hughs) Settle; son-in-law, Todd Settle; and grandchildren, Ben Settle, Abby Settle and Anna Settle, all of Zionsville. Aletha was a 1957 graduate of Freeport High School and moved to Zionsville in 1977. For 24 years, she worked for the American Greetings Company, starting as a part-time merchandiser and advancing to sales representative for central Indiana. After retiring in 2002, Aletha became a docent at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, where she completed a three-year course in art education and discovered a love for American art. She was an enthusiastic IMA ambassador, frequently leading tours for adult groups and elementary-school children. Aletha enjoyed an active life, as a loving wife and mother, dearly loved grandmother and eager community volunteer. She was an avid knitter and taught classes at The Village Yarn Shop. She also enjoyed traveling and spending winters in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was a member of the Zionsville Garden Club, Friends of the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library and several bridge clubs. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, October 11, at Flanner & Buchanan, Zionsville.
