Alan J. Thomas, 81, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away September 18, 2025, with family by his side. Alan was born in Indianapolis on December 27, 1943, to parents, Raymond and Bernice (Myers) Thomas. He graduated from Warren Central High School in 1962. Alan honorably served his country stateside in the Army Enlisted Reserves during the Vietnam Era.
Alan worked as a Cad Cam drafter/designer at Schwitzer Corporation and Eli Lilly until he was forced to retire at age 43 due to a brain aneurysm and stroke. Alan loved watching football (Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers), and was a true “girl dad,” coaching his daughters’ softball, was President of Band Boosters at Franklin Central High School, an original Girl Scout “do Dad,” and an avid gardener and do-it-yourselfer.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Norman Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pamela A., and three daughters, Teresa (A.J.) Briggs, Alana (Tony) Thomas, and Susan (James) Cogdill. Alan leaves behind 11 grandchildren, Maggie Briggs, Abby Briggs, McKenzie Thomas, Ally (Henry) Titus, Stephanie Thomas, Alexis Cogdill, Keifer (Jade) Cogdill, Kira Cogdill, Celeste Cogdill, Hunter Cogdill, and Myles Cogdill. He also leaves behind 3 great grandchildren, Max Stronghold, Mark Stronghold, and Barrett Briggs Owens.
Friends may call beginning at 10:00 am at Flanner Buchanan Funeral Center – Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, where funeral services will be held at noon. Entombment will immediately follow at Washington Park East Cemetery. Alan disliked dressing up and liked being comfortable. In honor of Alan, feel free to dress casually in what makes you comfortable.
