Agnes Alig Failey, beloved mother, wife and sister, died Thursday, Sept. 1, in a traffic accident near Harbor Springs, MI.
She was born in Indianapolis on Jan. 9, 1925, the daughter of Clarence and Marjorie (Stalnaker) Alig, one of seven children. She graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and attended Pine Manor Junior College in Massachusetts and Purdue University, before marrying James F. Failey, who died in 2004.
After raising three daughters, she enjoyed working in real estate for several years before retiring. She loved spending summers in Harbor Springs, Mich., where she had many friends. In Indianapolis Agnes was active in the Dramatic Club, Woodstock Country Club, the Colonial Dames, the Progressive Club, the Players Club, the Indianapolis Propylaeum and Second Presbyterian Church.
Among Agnes' many joys were the study of nature, especially birds; genealogy; and American history, particularly that of Indianapolis. She loved music and drama, formally and in everyday life, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone around her. She and Jim travelled widely, visiting almost every continent. She adored her family, especially her grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, brothers Clarence, Frank and Eldon Alig, sisters Barbara Smith and Martha Alig, and son-in-law Kevin Starkey.
She is survived by her brother Dr. Vincent Alig and wife Mary Jean; daughters Susan Failey of Bloomington (husband Brian Werth); Mary Failey Starkey, of Anderson; Jane Failey Carroll, of Nashville, Tenn. (husband Carlyle Carroll); grandchildren Nicholas and Julia Werth; Adrienne and Amanda Starkey; James F. Failey Carroll, Elizabeth Alig Price (husband Johnny Price), Peter Carroll, and Laura Grace Carroll, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is set for 4-8:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Home in Broad Ripple. The funeral service will be Saturday, Sept 10 at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.
