A. Bernard -Bernie- Frechtman

A. Bernard “Bernie” Frechtman

of Indianapolis, IN, passed away peacefully on Nov. 4, 2016 after a brief illness, just short of his 90th year. He was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1926 to Saul and Rae Frechtman and attended Brooklyn Technical High School. He received his BA degree from Brown University and his LLB from St. John’s University where he was a member of the Law Review. Bernie was admitted to practice in the states of New York and Indiana, various Federal District and Circuit Courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. He served in the United States Navy in WWII.
He maintained an active legal practice in both New York and Indianapolis in the diverse areas of staffing industry; franchise and corporate law; and commercial litigation, serving also as an expert witness. He drafted numerous statutes and participated in the preparation of legislation impacting the staffing industry in more than 20 states and was responsible for a number of court decisions which have had a substantial impact on the industry. He served as the Executive Vice President of an Amex listed staffing company and Chief Executive Officer of a national franchise company. During his career he participated in the original White House conference on equal employment opportunity and served as general counsel to a number of developing franchisors, several of which became public companies. He has written and lectured on various staffing industry and franchise law topic and is the author of six books on staffing law. In 1994 he was honored as the first inductee into the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Personnel Services for his contributions to the growth of the personnel services industry. He authored hundreds of articles on every conceivable aspect of staffing industry law.
He is survived by his wife, Merle Hope Lambert of Indianapolis, IN; daughter, Janet (Larry) Hoffer or W. Orange, NJ; son, Bill (Lori) Frechtman of Cumming, GA and several grandchildren: Steven, Andrew and Russell Hoffer; Ariel and Jordan Frechtman, Ilana Frechtman-Schmerling; and Marycatherine Register. He is also survived by his Indianapolis “family”: Schiela, Steve, Stephen and Jacob Pena, and his "adopted" son, Evaldo Fontes of Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
