James Arthur Court

June 27, 1940 — November 9, 2018

Indianapolis, Indiana

James A. Court, age 78, of Indianapolis, passed away Friday, November 9, 2018.

Survived by two daughters:  Yvette K. Court Gipson (Steve) and Lisa A. Court; one grandson, Nicholas E. Court-Owens, and one step-granddaughter, Morgan P.  Gann (nee Gipson) (Ryan); two sisters, Georgette Hartman, and Edith Cummings (Bob), and one brother, Stephen Court (Ingrid).  Preceded in death by his parents, Florence and George Court, eldest sister, Eleonore Graat, her husband, John Graat, his older brother, Boudewijn Court, and his brother-in-law, Herman Hartman.

James, also known as Bob to his extended family and as Jim or Jimmy to his friends, retired from Inland Container Corp. in 1998 after 33 years.  He then worked for Lucent Technologies and Jones Lang LaSalle until permanently retiring in 2010.  Jim held an A.A.S. in Computer Technologies from Purdue University.

Jim was born in 1940 during World War II in the former Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, where he developed his lifetime love for tropical locales, fruits, flowers, and plants.  His family moved to their home country of Holland (The Netherlands) in 1953 and later emigrated to the U.S. in 1958.  Despite not yet being a U.S. citizen, Jim was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1963 and felt compelled to serve his new home country, although he could have declined.  He served in the 4th Infantry Division on active duty and active reserves until 1969 and was very proud of his service and of becoming (1964) and being American.

True to his European roots, Jim had been an active soccer player with the Indianapolis Soccer Club at German Park for over 30 years and remained an avid soccer fan, but he also loved Notre Dame football.  Jim held his Roman Catholic faith very near and dear to his heart and attended Mass with his family.  He took great pride in his yard and his car and enjoyed catching up with his friends.  He loved music, movies, a good joke or funny story, and playing the lottery.  Jim also enjoyed traveling the U.S. over the years and especially loved the St. Pete/Treasure Island area of Florida and Nevada (with all the slot machines there!), but what he loved most was spending time with his family and having a good laugh.  He was a very caring, charismatic, and generous man who was so full of life.  He will be forever loved and missed.

Memorial contributions may be given to Catholic Charities USA.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 5-8pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East.  A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 11am at Nativity Catholic Church, 7225 Southeastern Ave, Indianapolis.  Burial will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery.
