Herman David Strakis

Herman David Strakis of Indianapolis, Indiana, died February 7, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 22, 1922 in Olivet, South Dakota to David and Mary Strakis. He served his country as a Marine in World War II. He worked as an auctioneer, a real estate broker, and a farmer. His memberships include Our Shepherd Lutheran Church (where he was a founding leader), the Lutheran Service Club, the Indiana State Auctioneer Association, and was a graduate of the CAI (Certified Auctioneer Institute). He was also one of the founding members of Lutheran High School in Indianapolis. He was a co-owner of the Johnson County Sales Pavilion.

Herman is survived by his wife Mary F. Strakis; children Cathie M. McKinley (Charles Robert), Russell David Strakis, George E. Strakis, and Connie N. Vance; grandchildren Kenny Strakis, Laura Isley, Matt Strakis, Melissa Marks, Beth Wood, and Cristine Brackney; 15 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandsons, and siblings Anna Rosebrough, Pauline Jefferson, and John Strakis. He was preceded in death by his siblings George Strakis, Emil Strakis, Otto Strakis, Martha Knopf, Esther Nicholas, and Dr. Marie Stirling; son-in-law Chris Vance and daughter-in-law Kathy Strakis; and his parents.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 10 from 2 to 8 PM at Flanner and Buchanan – Decatur, 5463 Kentucky Ave, Decatur. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11 AM at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 9201 W. 10th St, Avon with visitation 10 AM until the time of service. Burial will follow at Concordia Cemetery, Indianapolis. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Shepherd Lutheran Church or Lutheran High School.
