Donald Henry Holmes

Donald Henry Holmes, 93, of Fishers, passed away January 21, 2016. He was born November 15, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois to Orlando Marshall Holmes and Bertha Schaarmann Holmes. During World War II, Don served as an aviation radioman in the United States Coast Guard. He graduated from Butler University in 1949 and received his master’s degree from there in 1954. For 37 years he was a bacteriologist at Eli Lilly and Company.

An energetic man of many interests, he particularly enjoyed travel, ham radio, tennis, bridge, boating, wood working and reading He was a member of The American Society of Microbiologists, The American Radio Relay League, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, Servants of Christ Lutheran Church and Marco Lutheran Church in Marco Island, Florida.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Shirley Rae Evans Holmes, his son William Evans Holmes (Roxanne), his son Brian Marshall Holmes (Susan), and his daughter Nancy Rae Holmes (Mary Kaye), and three grandchildren: Michelle Anne, Emily Anne and Daniel Evan Holmes
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Servants of Christ Lutheran Church, 7650 Oaklandon Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46236. Visitation will be held from 11:30 AM until service time. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery with military rites. Flanner and Buchanan-Geist is entrusted with arrangements.
