A special weekend camp for grieving children and teens ages
7 to 17
August 23-25, 2013
Do you know a young person who would benefit from a weekend of grief support, encouragement and enjoyable activities? Camp Healing Tree exists to provide an opportunity for young people to share feelings of loss with other campers and caring adult volunteers and to learn that these feelings are normal.
Camp Healing Tree, established in 1995, is a program provided by several local hospice agencies and other community supporters. Grief and bereavement specialists from the sponsoring organizations direct and supervise the camp. The camp utilizes over 100 screened and trained volunteers to provide a safe environment where participants may speak openly about their grief. Campers are matched with an adult, trained buddy who stays with them during the weekend for support and supervision. The camp provides a supportive environment in which to gently teach coping skills and build self-esteem and trust. Although the camp focuses on grief, there are many enjoyable and fun activities for the campers, such as swimming, arts and crafts, games, campfire, sing-a-longs and entertaining shows. While the camp environment is rustic, the cabins are modern and air-conditioned. A registered nurse will be at the camp at all times.
Camp Healing Tree, located on the west side of Indianapolis at Jameson Camp, Inc., begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and concludes with a Memorial Service for the camp participants and their families at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. There is no charge to attend Camp Healing Tree. A $25 per camper/$50 maximum per family registration deposit is collected to reserve attendance and is returned upon check-in. Scholarships are available for families in need.
Due to limited availability, priority will be given to first-time campers this year. Additional bereavement support services for grieving families are available through Brooke’s Place (www.brookesplace.org or 317-705-9650.)
For more information, or to register a young person for Camp Healing Tree, call 317-705-9650 or visit www.brookesplace.org/camphealingtree beginning March 15, 2013. Please call soon, as space is limited to the first 70 campers.
Camp Healing Tree 2013 Sponsors include: Brooke’s Place for Grieving Young People, Dignity Memorial Funeral Homes, Eagle Creek Publications, Franciscan VNS Hospice, Indiana Funeral Care, Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care of Indiana, and VistaCare Hospice.

Grieving youth learn coping skills through Franciscan St. Francis Hospice program
INDIANAPOLIS – Death is a part of the life cycle, and it’s especially difficult for children to grasp and make sense out of it, particularly when they lose a loved one.
That’s why Franciscan St. Francis Hospice offers Caterpillar Kids, a support program that offers learning experiences for children ages 5 to 12.
“Children do grieve and they may express it differently than adults, but their feelings are as genuine and essential in healing,” said spiritual bereavement counselor Karla Riggs Norton. “Caterpillar Kids brings children together in a safe, nurturing environment where they receive information about grief and learn healthy ways to cope with the death of a loved one.”
St. Francis Hospice will offer its autumn Caterpillar Kids program Wednesdays, April 10, 17, 24, and May 1, 8 and 15. The free workshops meet from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Meetings are at Christ United Methodist Church, 8540 U.S. 31 South, one mile north of Greenwood Park Mall.
Led by staff trained in bereavement support for children, youngsters participate in storytelling, art projects, games and other sharing opportunities. Parents also are invited to participate in a concurrent session to assist them in supporting their children.
Registration is required. To register or for more information about Caterpillar Kids, call 317-528-2092 or 800-390-9915.
